Hi Jeff and Edmund; Good luck on your trip! The Miss. River is a real adventure. Bob Bradford and I set the Guinness World Record in 2003 by canoe at 18d, 4h, 51m (mississippichallenge.org). I've also raced it in 2001 with Kurt Zimmermann in a kayak (dreamkeeper.org). Both event websites are packed with information that will help you. There's a lot I can pass on personally, too. For example, your time-table is way off...expect to reach Mpls. in 12 days at the earliest. Be careful of Lake Winni. She has killed many canoers. (In 2003, Bob and I were caught in 32 foot waves at night, recorded on our GPS) The river opens up south of Mpls., and wind/storms/barges make canoeing very difficult. Use a marine radio...it could save your life. Take, but be careful on the Chain of Rocks route in St. Louis. Barges don't always play fair. The section between Baton Rouge and New Orleans is hell, and the next 90 miles to the Head of Passes isn't much better. Again, I can pass along a lot of hard-earned information and tips, just call. Best Wishes, Clark 845-634-6406 (NY)
